Ignis Suspension Woes: Warning Lights & Harsh Ride

My 2007 Ignis has been acting up lately with suspension issues and warning lights. The ride comfort has drastically decreased, making every small bump feel harsh. The car pulls up error codes and there is a warning light showing in the speedometer cluster. I suspect the shock absorbers or damping system might be faulty. Has anyone dealt with similar suspension failure symptoms? Particularly interested in repair costs and whether you needed to replace the entire suspension system or just specific components. Any tips on what to check first would be helpful before heading to the workshop.

I had a similar suspension system issue with my 2009 Suzuki Swift. With some experience working on cars, I recognized comparable symptoms when my car started behaving roughly on normal roads. The ride comfort was terrible and warning lights appeared exactly like you described. After checking, it turned out the issue was related to a faulty wiring connection to the suspension sensors. The cable connection had deteriorated over time, causing incorrect readings and affecting the car damping performance. Got it fixed at my regular workshop for 95€. They traced the problem to a damaged plug connection, replaced the wiring, and cleared the error codes. Car handling returned to normal immediately after the repair. Before spending money on new shock absorbers, I would suggest having the electrical connections checked first. Sometimes suspension failure symptoms can be triggered by sensor issues rather than mechanical problems. To provide more specific advice about your case, could you share: Have you noticed any unusual noises when going over bumps? Which specific error codes is the car showing? Did this start suddenly or gradually get worse? Has any suspension work been done recently?

Thanks for the detailed response and suggestions. At the most recent service (50840 KM), there were no suspension-related issues noted. The knocking sound over bumps started about 2 weeks ago and has gotten progressively worse. The error codes are P0502 and C1201. I started hearing metal clanking noises especially when going over speed bumps. The vehicle suspension feels completely unstable on cornering. No recent work has been done on the damping control systems or shock absorbers. I checked the wiring connections as suggested but they appear intact. Given the metallic sounds and degraded ride comfort, I am leaning towards a mechanical rather than electrical issue. Would it make sense to have just the front shock absorbers replaced first?

Thanks for the additional details. Going through a similar situation with my Swift, those specific error codes combined with the metallic noises raise concerns beyond just wiring. While my initial electrical fix solved the warning lights, I later faced mechanical issues with the shock absorbers. The metal clanking you describe matches what I experienced before my front struts failed completely. Given your symptoms, especially the unstable cornering and progressive deterioration of ride comfort, replacing the front shock absorbers would be a logical first step. The car handling issues you describe strongly suggest worn dampers rather than just sensor problems. In my case, I ended up replacing both front shock absorbers, as doing just one side can create uneven car damping. The total repair cost was around 420€ including parts and labor. The difference in vehicle suspension performance was immediately noticeable. Would recommend also having the strut mounts checked during replacement, as they often wear out alongside the shock absorbers and can cause similar metallic noises when damaged.

Thanks for all that info. I will schedule a suspension tuning appointment to have both front shock absorbers replaced. Makes total sense to do both sides at once for balanced car damping. The price estimate of 420€ helps set my expectations. I will also ask them to inspect the strut mounts while they are working on it, given the metallic sounds. Hopefully addressing these components will resolve both the ride comfort issues and error codes. I appreciate you sharing your similar experience, it helped confirm my suspicion that this is likely a mechanical rather than electrical suspension failure. Will update once I get it fixed in case others run into similar damping control problems with these models.
