Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, my 2000 Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel (with around 57k kilometers on it) is giving me some headaches recently. I've been noticing some black smoke pouring out during acceleration, an annoying check engine light that won't quit, a surprising drop in power, and some jerky movements when I try to pick up the pace. To add to it, there's also a loud hissing sound when I accelerate, unimpressive fuel economy, an overpowering exhaust smell, and a whistling noise. I'm feeling this might be due to some issues with the boost pressure control after my less-than-delightful experience with the mechanic last time. Has anyone else experienced something similar? What did your mechanic do? Looking for any advice or shared experiences! Thanks!

Hey there, totally understand your predicament. Actually, I've got a 1997 Hyundai Tucson and had somewhat a similar issue just last year. Like yours, my ride was belching black smoke during acceleration, had this frustrating check engine light on, and there was a drop in power. Even had that eerie hissing sound when I accelerated and my fuel economy was horrible. I had to take it to my mechanic and after a bit of investigation, he saw that the Wiring harness to the boost pressure actuator was damaged in my car. In his words, the damaged wiring harness was messing up the engine’s ability to regulate turbo pressure. Hence, causing these symptoms you've just listed. To fix it, he replaced the damaged wiring harness, and what a difference it made! The car roared back to life immediately; no more black smoke, no annoying hissing, and my fuel efficiency improved significantly. I must note that sorting the wiring harness to my boost pressure actuator was a bit of a serious issue, considering the implications it had on the performance of the car. Of course, every situation could be unique though. Have your mechanic check it out. It might just be the solution in your case as well. Best of luck!

Hey, your issue sounds all too familiar. I had the same kind of ordeal with my 2002 Santa Fe Diesel. It sounds uncanny, but it was almost the exact same issue - black smoke, check engine light, drop in power, the works. Spot on! Interesting what mentioned about the damaged wiring harness on the boost pressure actuator - my mechanic reached the same conclusion! Once he replaced it, my Santa Fe was back demonstrating its old glory. No more troublesome warning lights or poor fuel economy. But just out of curiosity,, do you still recall roughly how much that repair cost you? And have you encountered any other issues since you got it fixed? Cheers!

Hey there! I totally remember that repair - feels like just yesterday! So if you're curious, the repair for the damaged wiring harness set me back around 155.00 €. Not the cheapest fix, but certainly worth it for the peace of mind and getting my Hyundai back to its old revving self. Oh, and to answer your other question - after that fix, the boost pressure control has been behaving itself nicely, seriously, I've not had any similar issues since then. Life after seeing the mechanic has been pretty smooth sailing with my old Tucson. All the best with working on your Santa Fe! Hope it gets back to performing just as well soon. Cheers!

Wow, thanks so much for the advice, guys! It's reassuring to hear that others have experienced the same issue and found a solution. I'll indeed have my mechanic give a thorough look over the Wiring harness to the boost pressure actuator as recommended. Fingers crossed, it could be the breath of fresh air my faithful Santa Fe needs. And thank you,, for mentioning the cost. At least now I have a ballpark figure of what I might be up against. Although it seems a bit pricy, as long as my Hyundai gets back its mojo, it'll be worth every penny! Here's hoping for a smooth journey post this unforeseen detour. I'll surely keep you updated about the outcome of my next trip to the mechanic. Until then, safe and fun driving to all the car fanatics out there. Cheers!
