Hyundai Porter 2014 Issues: Black Smoke, Power Loss, Engine Instability - Suspected Fuel Volume Regulator Problem

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey, my 2014 Hyundai Porter with a Gasoline engine has been acting up lately. I'm getting black smoke from the exhaust when I hit the gas, the check engine light is on, the engine sometimes cuts off on its own, and there seems to be a drop in power. It's also jerking on acceleration, guzzling more fuel than usual, and stalling while idling. Plus, the engine doesn't feel steady and the exhaust smells pretty bad. I suspect there might be an issue with the fuel volume regulator, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone experienced these symptoms and found a solution for them? Really interested in hearing about your experiences and how you got your car back to normal. Thanks!

Hey! I had something similar with my 2012 Hyundai H100, just a slightly different model. I'm no auto mechanic, just have some basic experience from dealing with my own car issues. It definitely sounds like a fuel problem. In my case, it turned out to be the high-pressure pump, it was defective. I took it into my local garage where they confirmed my suspicions and got it swapped out. It set me back 1510€, a hefty sum but it was well worth it. The beast's been running smoothly since. Knowing the exact specs of your Porter (engine size/model) can be crucial in diagnosing the issue. Also, can you tell me more about the check engine light? Any fault codes showing up? This could really help in pinpointing the problem. Stay strong, we'll figure this out!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience, really appreciate it. I did a quick check with my fault code reader and got the P0171 code, which indicates that the system is running too lean. I'm guessing this might be related to the issue? My engine is a 2.5L Diesel engine if that's any help. I had the last servicing done about a year back when the car had hit the 70872 KM mark. Haven't serviced it since then. The high-pressure pump sounds like one heck of an expensive problem! I really hope it's something less costly. Will get it checked ASAP though. Cheers for the help, bud!

Hey, no problem at all! Oh P0171... I remember encountering the same nasty code on my dash once. That can definitely cause all sorts of funky symptoms like what you're experiencing. Basically, running too lean means that there's not enough fuel in the air-fuel mixture combustion. Could be due to several reasons, faulty MAF sensor, clogged fuel injectors, leaking injectors or even the infamous high-pressure pump issue that I faced. Given that you're running a diesel, it could also be related to the diesel particular filter (DPF). Sometimes if these get clogged up, it can cause poor fuel economy and black smoke from the exhaust. Not sure how much a DPF replacement costs but it's another possibility on the long list. It's hard to pinpoint from here, but seeing the symptoms you are having, I'd definitely recommend getting your Porter to a trusted mechanic soon and hopefully, it's not going to be as costly as my high-pressure pump issue! Also, regular servicing can go a long way in preventing these sorts of issues. Once you get this fixed, maybe consider taking your Porter for servicing every once a year or every 15-20k kms. Good luck fingers crossed for you!

Hey, advice taken and appreciated! I've booked an appointment with my local mechanics to get it checked out tomorrow. I'm crossing my fingers it's not the high-pressure pump. It hadn't even crossed my mind that it could be the DPF causing such a havoc, so that's definitely something I'd get them to check too. Oh, and you're totally right about the regular servicing. I sometimes neglect it because life gets so hectic, but the stubborn issues cropping up now are a wake-up call. Post this, I'll definitely be more vigilant with my servicing routine and get it checked every 15-20K kms as you suggested. Thanks so much for all the help. You're a lifesaver!
