Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hi! I'm struggling with my 2009 Hyundai Matrix which is running on a Gasoline engine and has clocked about 65762 km. The beast, outta nowhere, throws black smoke when accelerating, taking much longer to start when it's cold, the check engine light keeps popping up, and the engine even switches off all by itself! Not to mention, the fuel economy which has been absolutely awful and just to top it all, some days it doesn’t even start. I suspect the culprit could be the Cold start injector. Anyone else battled with this stuff? What panned out at your mechanic's? Interested in your experiences and suggestions. Trying not to relive a bad garage experience. EdinburghNJenkins.

Hey there EdinburghNJenkins, Sounds like you've got quite the issue! Can definitely empathize. Believe it or not, faced a similar problem with my own ride, a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon. The symptoms were pretty much identical. Black smoke when accelerating, awful fuel economy, the works. For me, the problem was injectors. This beast had injector issues that were causing it to burn too rich, thus the black smoke. The lousy gas mileage and the longer start time when cold were also due to the janky injectors. Essentially, they weren't throwing the right amount of fuel into the engine, causing all these chain reaction problems. The good news? Once the problem was diagnosed, fixing it wasn't too bad. The real challenge was diagnosing it correctly. It didn't feel like a massive issue once we identified the source of the problem. Swapped out the faulty injectors, and voila, it was like I got my old car back. Engine went back to normal, no black smoke, even the gas mileage improved. The bottom line? Get that Matrix of yours to a good mechanic pronto, have them check out the injectors thoroughly. Hopefully it's a similar minor issue and you'll be back on the road in no time. Good luck!

Hey! Your misadventure sounds nearly identical to mine - super weird! I reckon you might've nailed it with the injectors - seems all the signs were there for your Tiburon. Made me sigh a breathe of relief knowing it wasn't a complete car breakdown for you. Just a query, if you can recall, what did the ol' wallet have to cough up for swapping out those naughty injectors? And has anything else popped up since you've fixed it? Cheers for the advice and keeping my fingers crossed that it's just the injectors playing up with my Matrix too! Can do without a headache right now, haha.

Hey back at ya! Yeah, those naughty injectors had me burning a hole in my pocket - a cool 515.00€ to be exact. A bit steep, but hey, you gotta dish out the cash to keep your beast purring, right? But believe me, it was worth every cent. Not only did the beast start behaving, but also, I swear it felt like a brand new ride. About your other question, I must say, the answer is a big NOPE! Ever since I got the Cold start injector issue sorted out with my mechanic, the Tiburon has been running like a dream. Thought the problem was going to make a comeback, but nope, she's been steady as a rock. I'm hopeful the same goes for your Hyundai Matrix all the best with the fix. Looks like you'll be back blowing off the cobwebs on the motorway sooner rather than later, haha! Fingers crossed for ya!

Oi, 515.00€, a bit steep as you said, but if it gets my Matrix back to its old self, then I guess it's worth the pain. I mean, deal's a deal, right? Glad to hear your Tiburon's been faring well post the grand makeover, gives me a bit of a positive outlook here amidst all this chaos. A toast to your ride staying steady and here's hoping mine follows suit. Can already picture myself cruising on the highway without the smoke screen. Thanks for your well wishes and the friendly mechanic banter! Will sure update you once I get this problem sorted. All the best to you and your Tiburon! 'Til we cross paths again in the automobile world, haha. Cheers!
