Honda XRV Starting Issues: Battery or Something Worse?

Car won't start

|

Dim or flickering lights

|

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Longer cold start time

|

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Weird engine noise

Hey all! Need advice with my 2014 Honda XRV (gas engine, 158k km). Having a rough time with starting, takes forever when cold, and sometimes won't start at all. Battery seems weak, lights are dimming, and there's a weird noise from the engine. Warning light just popped up too. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2011 Honda CR-V (gas engine) last year. From what you're describing, it sounds exactly like the starter motor problem I experienced. The symptoms match perfectly, slow cranking, dimming lights, and that grinding noise during start attempts. Initially thought it was just the battery, but when I finally took it to the garage, they diagnosed a defective starter motor. The old starter's solenoid had worn out, causing intermittent connection issues. They had to replace the entire starter unit. The repair wasn't super complex, but it's definitely not a DIY job unless you're really experienced with car repairs. The mechanic needed to remove several components to access the starter motor. The whole repair took about 3-4 hours. Just don't wait too long, my mistake was driving it like that for weeks. You risk getting stranded somewhere when the starter finally gives up completely. The starter motor is a crucial component, and these symptoms won't resolve on their own.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Had the exact same symptoms with my XRV and it turned out to be the starter motor too. Can't remember how much I paid though, do you recall what the total cost was for yours? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since the repair? My Honda's been running smooth after the fix, but always good to know what to watch out for.

Hey again! Glad to hear you got it sorted out! Yes, I remember exactly what I paid, it was 565 € total, including labor and parts. The starter motor itself was the main expense. After getting it fixed, my CR-V has been starting like a champ, no more of that annoying cranking or dimming lights! It's such a relief not having to cross my fingers every time I turn the key. The repair totally solved the issue, and I haven't had any related problems since then. Actually, it's been running better than ever for the past year. No other issues have popped up, guess we caught it just in time before it could cause any other problems. Good to hear your XRV is doing well too! These Hondas are pretty reliable once you sort out any issues that come up. Just keep up with regular maintenance and you should be good to go. Having a working starter makes such a huge difference, no more of those nerve-wracking moments wondering if the car will start!

Thanks for the cost breakdown! Yeah, that's about what I remember paying too. Finally took my XRV to a new mechanic last week after the starter completely died. Got really lucky, found this honest guy who diagnosed it right away and fixed it the same day. The repair wasn't cheap, but totally worth it. No more stressing about whether I'll be able to start my car! The mechanic also checked everything else while he was at it and said the rest of the engine looks good. Such a relief after that whole ordeal. You're right about maintenance, been super careful about keeping up with it since the repair. Car's running like new now, starts up instantly every time. The engine sounds way better too, and all those warning lights are gone. Definitely learned my lesson about not waiting too long when these issues pop up! Appreciate all your help. It's good to know someone else went through the same thing and got it sorted. Here's hoping we both get many more trouble-free years from our Hondas!
