Honda WRV Battery Issues: Lights Flickering & Hard Starts

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey everyone! I've got a 2020 Honda WRV diesel with about 54,840 KM on it, and I'm facing some electrical gremlins. The lights have been acting up lately, dimming and flickering, and the engine's been struggling to start, showing signs of a weak battery. I suspect it might be a battery sensor issue, but my previous experience with mechanics hasn't been great. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their WRV? Would love to hear about your experiences and how you got it fixed. Any recommendations on what exactly could be wrong? Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 Honda BRV diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, flickering lights and sluggish starts. Initially thought it was just the battery, but turned out to be a faulty battery sensor microprocessor. Got it checked at the garage, and the diagnostic showed the sensor wasn't correctly reading the battery's charge state, causing the charging system to malfunction. It's actually quite a serious issue since it can leave you stranded if not fixed, happened to me once while I was about to head out. The fix required replacing the entire battery sensor unit. They also had to recalibrate the new sensor with the car's ECU. The whole job took about 3 hours, but it's sorted all the electrical issues completely. Haven't had a single problem since then. If you're seeing these symptoms, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. These sensors are known to fail in our Honda diesels, and it's better to fix it before it causes more problems with the electrical system.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I think I'll go ahead and get the battery sensor unit checked first. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Wondering if any other electrical quirks popped up afterward.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely happy to help! After I posted earlier, I actually took my WRV to the mechanic and got it all sorted. The total cost came to 315€ for replacing the faulty battery sensor microprocessor, and I can happily say it was worth every penny! Since getting it fixed, my car's been running like a dream, no more flickering lights or starting issues. It's such a relief not having to worry about getting stranded anymore! The electrical system's working perfectly now, and I haven't noticed any other quirks popping up. It's been about three months since the repair, and everything's still running smoothly. Honestly, it was exactly what the mechanic said, just the battery sensor microprocessor being defective. Once they replaced that and recalibrated everything, all those annoying electrical gremlins disappeared. Best decision I made was getting it sorted straight away rather than waiting for it to get worse. Trust me, you're making the right call getting it checked out. Let me know how it goes with your repair!

Thanks so much for the follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and you were spot on! It was definitely the battery sensor causing all the trouble. My experience was pretty smooth, dropped the car off in the morning, and they had it ready by afternoon. The mechanic showed me the old sensor, and it was clearly worn out. The repair cost was similar to what you paid, around 300€, and included the new part, labor, and recalibration. They even gave the battery a good check-up to make sure everything else was fine. Just drove home, and wow, what a difference! The lights are bright and steady now, and the car starts up immediately. No more of that anxious feeling wondering if it'll start or not. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it! Really appreciate all your help and sharing your experience. It definitely made me feel more confident about getting it fixed. Fingers crossed it'll keep running smoothly like yours!

Let our mechanics help you!
