Honda Stream Won't Start, ECU Relay Problem & Solutions

Car won't start

Hey everyone, my 2014 Honda Stream with the gas engine suddenly won't start. I suspect the ECU main relay might be faulty. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Would love to hear your repair experiences and what the actual fix was at the workshop. Any troubleshooting tips would be really helpful.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2016 Honda Jazz . Just like your Stream, it wouldn't start out of nowhere. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, it turned out to be the main relay too. I took it to my regular mechanic, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair was straightforward, they replaced the main relay unit, and it cost me around 120 Euro. The car's been running perfectly since then. Before you jump to conclusions though, could you share what exactly happens when you try to start the car? Does it crank? Any warning lights? Also, would be helpful to know your mileage and if you've had any electrical issues before. Just FYI, this issue is pretty common in Hondas, my cousin had the same problem with his Civic too. Let me know those details, and I might be able to help you narrow it down further!

Hey, thanks for your input! When I try to start it, there's no crank at all, just a clicking sound. The dashboard lights come on, but that's about it. Mine's at 166687 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. Everything was fine until yesterday morning when it just wouldn't start. I was actually thinking about checking the battery first, but your relay experience is making me think twice. Did your Jazz make any clicking sounds too? I might take it to the workshop tomorrow, but wanted to get some opinions from fellow Honda owners first. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Hey again! Yes, that clicking sound is exactly what my Jazz was doing! It's like déjà vu hearing you describe it, literally the same symptoms I had. The dashboard lights coming on but no crank is super similar to what I experienced. You know what's funny? I initially thought it was the battery too! I even got my neighbor to try jump-starting it, but that didn't help at all. That's when I knew something else was up. At 166k km, you're pretty much at the same mileage where my relay decided to give up (mine was around 170k). Quick tip though, when my mechanic replaced the relay, he mentioned it's worth checking both the battery and starter connections while you're at it. Apparently, these components can sometimes act up together. In my case, they cleaned up some corrosion on the battery terminals too, just to be thorough. If you're heading to the workshop tomorrow, definitely mention the clicking sound, it's a pretty telltale sign. Since then, I've had zero issues with my Jazz, and it's been about 8 months now. Keep us posted on what they find, I'm curious to know if it's the same problem!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! It's really reassuring to hear your Jazz had the exact same symptoms, especially that clicking sound. I'll definitely mention all this when I take it to the workshop tomorrow. Good point about checking the battery connections and starter too, might as well have them look at everything while they're at it. I really appreciate you sharing your repair experience. The fact that it's been 8 months with no issues after fixing the relay gives me hope that it might be a straightforward fix for my Stream too. I'll update you guys tomorrow after the workshop visit. Fingers crossed it's just the relay and nothing more serious! Thanks again for taking the time to help out a fellow Honda owner.
