Honda Pilot Running Hot, A/C Dead: Fan Sensor Issue?

A/C System Not Engaging

|

Overheating

Hey all! Got a bit concerned about my 2008 Honda Pilot (75,928 KM, gas engine). Engine's been running hot lately and the A/C won't kick in. I suspect it might be the motor fan speed sensor acting up, but after a previous disappointing mechanic experience, I'd rather hear from others first. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Pilot? What was the actual issue and how much did the repair cost? Appreciate any insights! Thanks

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2011 Honda CR-V last summer. The symptoms were exactly like yours, engine running hot and A/C not working properly. At first, I thought it was just low coolant, but the mechanic found it was indeed a faulty speed sensor on the cooling fan motor. The sensor wasn't sending the correct signals, so the fan wasn't spinning at the right speeds or sometimes not at all. When they pulled the old sensor, it was pretty corroded. It wasn't a super serious repair, but definitely not something you want to ignore since it could lead to engine overheating. In my case, they replaced the sensor and did a quick diagnostic check to make sure everything was communicating properly. The fan's been working perfectly since then, and the A/C is back to normal. The whole thing took about 2 hours to fix. Would definitely recommend getting it checked out soon, better safe than sorry with cooling system issues. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I'm dealing with the exact same symptoms. It's good to know it wasn't something more serious in your case. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! Yep, I got it fixed, and it cost me 250€ for the speed sensor replacement. I'd say it was money well spent because my CR-V has been running like a charm ever since. The A/C is blowing nice and cold, and the engine temperature stays exactly where it should be. It's been about 8 months now since the repair, and I haven't had a single issue pop up related to the cooling system. The mechanic did a great job diagnosing the problem, turned out the speed sensor was completely shot, just like they suspected. Once they swapped it out, it was like night and day difference. Trust me, you'll feel the improvement right away once you get it fixed. The peace of mind alone is worth it, knowing your engine isn't at risk of overheating anymore. If you need any other details about the repair, just let me know! Take care!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic yesterday. You were totally right, it was the speed sensor, and fixing it made a world of difference! My repair came in around the same price range as yours. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me the old corroded sensor. The best part is my Pilot's running perfectly now. The A/C is ice cold again, and the temperature gauge stays right where it should be. Such a relief to have it sorted! Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it checked out right away instead of second-guessing myself. Really appreciate everyone's help on this! Take care!
