Honda Pilot Engine Troubles? Multiple Issues Explained

Jerking on acceleration

Hey everyone, need help with my 2018 Honda Pilot! Engine's acting up with multiple issues, unusually shutting off, struggling to cold start, power loss, and rough acceleration. Check engine light is on too. I suspect it might be the fuel pump but want to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? How did your mechanic diagnose and fix it? What was the repair cost like? Really appreciate any insights!

Hey there! I had something really similar with my 2016 Honda CR-V. I've got some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff. The symptoms were exactly like yours, super annoying unusual stalls and cold start problems. After struggling with it for a week, I took it to my regular mechanic. Turns out it was a software issue with the fuel pump control module. They had to reprogram it, and it cost me around 45 Euro. Been running smoothly ever since! What engine type do you have in your Pilot? Also, have you checked if there are any stored error codes? Knowing these details would help me share more specific info about my experience. Just a heads up, don't wait too long to get it checked. These symptoms can get worse pretty quickly, and you don't want to end up stranded somewhere!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got the gasoline engine model, and yeah, these symptoms have me worried. My Pilot's got 243143 KM on it, and it was running perfectly fine until last week. I just had it serviced two months ago, which makes this even more frustrating. I haven't pulled the error codes yet, but I'm heading to get that checked tomorrow. Good to know about the fuel pump control module, that's definitely less expensive than replacing the entire fuel pump, which I was worried about! Did you notice any warning signs before your car started acting up? Just trying to figure out if I missed something obvious here.

Hey again! Good to hear you're getting those codes checked. On my CR-V, honestly, there weren't any obvious warning signs before everything started acting up, it just hit me out of the blue one morning. But looking back, I remember the engine did feel slightly hesitant during acceleration for maybe a week before things got bad, but it was so subtle I brushed it off. Since you mentioned your recent service, maybe ask them to check if anything they did might have triggered this? In my case, the software issue popped up about three weeks after a routine service too, weird coincidence, right? Actually, before they diagnosed the control module problem, I was totally convinced it was the fuel pump itself because the symptoms were so similar. One thing I didn't mention before, I also noticed my fuel efficiency dropped a bit before all this started. Did you notice anything like that? It wasn't dramatic, but definitely noticeable on my usual drives. Keep us posted about those error codes! Really curious to see if you're dealing with the same thing I had. Trust me, I know how stressful these unusual issues can be, especially when the car's been reliable for so long.

Thanks for all the detailed info! Now that you mention it, I did notice my fuel efficiency drop slightly over the past couple weeks, probably should've paid more attention to that. It's honestly such a relief to hear your repair was just a software issue and not a complete fuel pump replacement. I actually just checked my service records, and interestingly, they did do some electronic system updates during my last service. I'll definitely bring that up when I take it in. The timing seems too similar to your situation to be just coincidence. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's given me a much clearer idea of what to discuss with my mechanic tomorrow. I'll definitely update the thread once I get those error codes and find out what's actually going on. Fingers crossed it's just the control module like yours was! This kind of issue is definitely nerve-wracking, but knowing someone else solved similar symptoms without major repairs makes me feel a lot better.
