Honda Pilot Brake Warning Light Mystery, Help Needed!

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone! My 2022 Honda Pilot has started showing a brake warning light on the dash. I suspect worn brake pads but want to be sure before heading to the shop. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Would love to hear what caused it in your case and how it was fixed. Any tips on what to look out for? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars . I actually had a similar warning light pop up on my 2020 Honda CR-V last year. Initially thought it was just brake pads too, but turned out to be trickier, it was actually a faulty DSC/ABS control unit. Took it to my trusted mechanic after my usual visual inspection didn't show any obvious brake pad wear. The repair hit my wallet pretty hard (€1000), but it had to be done for safety. The shop had to order the specific part and reprogram it, but they got me back on the road in a couple of days. Before jumping to conclusions though, what's the exact behavior of the warning light? Does it stay on constantly or flicker? Any weird brake pedal feel? Also, when's the last time you had your brake system checked? Would really help to know these details to point you in the right direction!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Pilot just hit 107201 KM and had its last service about two months ago. The warning light stays on constantly, and I've noticed the brake pedal feels slightly softer than usual. No grinding noise or vibration though, which is good I guess. At first, I was worried it might be something major like your ABS unit situation, but since my vehicle is still pretty new, I'm hoping it's just the brake pads needing replacement. Going to take it to the shop tomorrow to be on the safe side. Better to catch these things early than wait for bigger problems! Have you guys had any other brake-related issues after your repair? Just curious if I should keep an eye out for anything specific.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up about your Pilot. You know, after that ABS unit drama with my CR-V last year, I've been super careful about monitoring any brake-related issues. Honestly, that softer brake pedal feel you mentioned rings a bell, definitely something to get checked out ASAP. Good call on taking it to the shop tomorrow! After my experience, I've learned not to take chances with brake warning lights, even on newer vehicles. Since you asked, I actually haven't had any major brake issues since that repair last year. The ABS unit replacement did the trick. But I did notice some squeaking from the rear brakes about a month ago, which just turned out to be some debris, quick cleaning sorted that right out. One thing I've started doing since my repair is paying extra attention to how the brake pedal feels during my morning commute. Even slight changes can be early warning signs. Also started getting more regular brake fluid checks, learned that the hard way after my expensive repair! Keep us posted on what the shop finds, really curious to know if it's just brake pads or something else. These newer Hondas can be tricky sometimes with their warning systems!

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! Really appreciate you sharing those maintenance tips, especially about monitoring the brake pedal feel and getting regular brake fluid checks. That's definitely something I'll start doing more consciously now. I've booked an appointment for tomorrow morning at 9 AM, and your experience has helped me feel more prepared for what might come up. You're absolutely right about not taking chances with brake warnings, better to deal with it now than risk bigger problems down the road. I'll keep monitoring for any other changes before my appointment tomorrow. I've started a note on my phone to document everything I've noticed, the constant warning light, softer pedal feel, and thankfully no weird noises yet. That should help the mechanics diagnose it faster. I'll definitely update the group once I find out what's causing the issue. Fingers crossed it's just the brake pads and not an expensive ABS unit like in your case! Thanks again for all the help!

Let our mechanics help you!
