Honda Life Transmission Warning Signs: Owner Seeks Help

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Hey there! Having some trouble with my '04 Honda Life (202k km) and hoping someone can share their experience. The transmission's acting up, jerky shifts, grinding sounds, and the speedo warning light is on. I think it might be the transmission temp sensor, but got burned by a mechanic recently so I'm a bit hesitant. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Honda? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair set you back? Any trustworthy mechanic recommendations would be great too.

Hey! I had similar symptoms with my '07 Honda Fit last year. The grinding and jerky shifting turned out to be low transmission fluid, a relatively simple fix. When I took it to the garage, they found a slow leak from one of the transmission seals. My main symptoms matched yours, rough shifting, weird noises, and warning lights. Got the seals replaced and a fluid change, it's been shifting smoothly since then. Make sure they check the fluid level and condition first before jumping to sensor replacements. Mine had 185k km when this happened, and it wasn't a major repair considering Honda's reliability. The technician mentioned that low transmission fluid is pretty common in these models and can mimic more serious transmission issues. Best to get it checked soon though, running low on fluid can cause bigger problems if ignored too long.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the transmission seals being the culprit. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was for the seals and fluid change? Also curious if you've had any other transmission problems since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! Actually, I just got back from the mechanic last week for that same transmission issue I mentioned. While they did find low transmission fluid like in my initial diagnosis, there was also a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor causing those warning lights. The total came to 365€ for everything, including fixing both the fluid level and replacing the sensor. I know that might sound a bit steep, but it was worth every penny because my Fit is running like a dream now! The shifting is super smooth, no more grinding sounds, and those annoying warning lights are gone for good. Since getting it fixed, I haven't had a single transmission problem. It's honestly like driving a different car! If you're experiencing similar symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later. The peace of mind alone is worth it, and you'll avoid any potential damage from driving with low fluid levels. Feel free to ask if you need any other details about the repair! Always happy to help another Honda owner out.

Thanks for all the detailed info! Actually, I took your advice and got my car checked yesterday. You won't believe it, but it was exactly what you described, low transmission fluid and a bad sensor! The mechanic I found was great, super transparent about everything. The total bill came to a bit more than yours because they also found a small leak that needed fixing, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's running so much better now, no more jerky shifts or weird noises. Those warning lights are finally off too! Really glad I asked here first instead of just taking it to my old mechanic who probably would've tried selling me a whole new transmission or something. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right call! Feels good to have this sorted out finally.

Let our mechanics help you!
