Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey all! My 2019 Honda Grace (33.8K km) is giving me headaches lately. The engine's throwing black smoke when I accelerate, making weird hissing and whistling sounds, and really struggling with power. Check engine light is on, and I'm burning through fuel like crazy. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit wary. I suspect it might be the charge air temp sensor, but wanted to hear if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms? Any recommendations on what to check or experiences with repairs would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Let me share my experience with similar symptoms on my 2016 Honda Civic (gasoline). Had almost identical issues last month, black smoke, whistling noise, and poor acceleration. After scanning, the garage found it was indeed the engine control unit (ECU) that was malfunctioning. The faulty ECU was misreading sensor data, causing incorrect fuel mixture and boost pressure. In my case, they had to replace the ECU completely. It was definitely a serious issue that required immediate attention, as continuing to drive could've damaged other engine components. The repair took about two days, including programming and testing the new unit. I'd suggest getting it properly diagnosed with a scanner first. The symptoms you're describing might be related to multiple issues, but they're very similar to what I experienced with the faulty ECU. Don't wait too long, these symptoms usually don't improve on their own.

Thanks for sharing your ECU experience! That's really interesting because I was worried it might be something more complicated. I'm dealing with similar issues with my Grace right now and your post caught my attention. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the whole repair end up costing you? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Just trying to get an idea of what I might be in for with my car.

Hey there! Thanks for asking about the follow-up. Happy to report that everything's been running like a dream since I got it fixed! The total bill came to 1000€ for sorting out the ECU, and while it wasn't cheap, it was totally worth it. The mechanic actually confirmed it was the charge air temperature sensor acting up too, but that got sorted along with the ECU replacement. My Civic's performing beautifully now, no more black smoke, weird noises, or power issues. Fuel consumption is back to normal too, which is a huge relief for my wallet! It's been about two months since the repair, and I haven't noticed any other problems pop up. The engine's running super smooth, and those annoying symptoms haven't come back at all. If you're experiencing similar issues with your Grace, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Sure, the cost might sting a bit, but it's way better than risking more serious engine damage down the line. Plus, being able to drive without worrying about those symptoms is just priceless!

Thanks so much for all that detail! Actually, I bit the bullet and took my Grace to a mechanic yesterday. Turns out you were spot on, it was an ECU issue, but my repair was a bit cheaper since they only needed to reprogram it rather than replace the whole unit. Cost me 600€ in total, which wasn't as bad as I feared! The mechanic was really thorough and professional, unlike my last experience. They got everything sorted in just one day, and I'm already noticing a huge difference. No more black smoke when I accelerate, the weird noises have completely stopped, and the engine's got its power back. Plus, my fuel consumption has dropped back to normal, such a relief! Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to get it checked out properly. Now I can finally enjoy driving my car again without worrying about every little sound it makes!
