Honda Freed: Metal in Oil + Warning Lights = Engine Alert!

Metal shavings in oil

Hey everyone, my 2012 Honda Freed is showing some concerning symptoms lately. The oil light is on, found metal shavings in the oil, and there's a warning light on the speedometer cluster. I suspect it might be related to the engine oil pressure switch, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? What was the actual cause and how did your mechanic fix it? Any insights would be really helpful.

Hey there! I've got some experience with Hondas (moderate car knowledge here). Had a similar issue with my 2010 Honda Jazz, and my cousin owns a Stream. I feel your pain, I also had metal particles in the oil and warning lights popping up. Turns out someone had put the wrong type of engine oil during a previous service. The incorrect oil caused increased friction and metal wear inside the engine. Took it to my trusted mechanic who did a complete oil system flush, replaced the oil and filter, and checked the oil pressure switch as well. The whole thing cost me around 175 Euro, but it was worth it to prevent more serious damage. Before I can give more specific advice, How many miles/km on your Freed? When was your last oil change? What type of oil is currently in the engine? Best to get this checked ASAP, metal shavings in oil is never good news!

Thanks for your input! My Freed has 185135 KM on the clock, and I just had it serviced last month. This issue started happening right after. I'm using the manufacturer-recommended 5W-30 synthetic oil. You're right about getting it checked quickly, I'm actually worried those metal shavings might indicate something more serious going on. Did your mechanic mention anything about potential bearing wear when you had similar symptoms? The ticking noise I'm hearing makes me extra nervous about this whole situation. Appreciate the advice about the oil system flush, might be worth trying that first before jumping to more expensive repairs.

Hey again! Yeah, when you mention that ticking noise along with the metal shavings, it really rings a bell from my experience. When I had my Jazz looked at, my mechanic actually did point out some bearing wear, specifically the main bearings were showing signs of damage. That ticking sound you're describing? Had the exact same thing, and it was definitely nerve-wracking! Since you mentioned this started right after the service, I'm a bit suspicious. You know, even though they put in the correct 5W-30 oil, sometimes if air gets trapped in the system during an oil change, it can cause temporary pressure issues. But given the metal shavings, I'd bet there's more going on here. In my case, I got lucky and caught it early enough. The flush helped, but I also ended up needing to replace a couple of bearings. Cost me about 450 Euro total, but it was way better than letting it progress to full engine failure. One thing I learned from my experience, don't just focus on the oil pressure switch like you initially thought. While it could be part of the problem, those metal shavings and the ticking are pointing to something mechanical. Might want to get a compression test done too, just to be safe. That really helped diagnose my issue accurately. Would you mind keeping us updated on what you find out? I'm really curious if it turns out to be similar to what I dealt with!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience in detail, it's actually both helpful and concerning! You've got me convinced that I need to look beyond just the oil pressure switch. The similarity between your symptoms and mine, especially that ticking noise and bearing wear, is too close to ignore. I've just booked an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning, going to request that compression test you mentioned. Really hoping I've caught this early enough like you did. The thought of full engine failure is definitely not something I want to deal with! The price you mentioned for the bearing replacement isn't as bad as I feared, I was imaging much worse numbers. I'll definitely keep you updated once I get the diagnosis. Never thought getting it serviced would lead to all this drama, but I'm glad I asked here. At least now I can go to the mechanic with some idea of what to look out for. Fingers crossed it's something relatively straightforward like your case!
