Honda Elysion DPF Issues: Power Loss & Sensor Problems

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Hey all, need help with my 2013 Honda Elysion! Engine light is on and I'm dealing with power loss plus a strong exhaust smell. DPF won't regenerate properly either. I suspect it might be the exhaust gas temp sensor acting up. Has anyone faced similar symptoms? Would love to know what repairs were done and how your mechanic fixed it. Any tips would help! Thanks in advance.

Having some experience with cars here. Had a similar issue with my 2011 Honda Odyssey (pretty close to your Elysion). Initially thought it was just the sensor too, but turned out the exhaust system had multiple leaks causing those exact symptoms, power loss and that nasty smell. Took it to my regular workshop and they found cracks near the manifold and some corroded parts. Total fix was around 265 Euro, included replacing damaged sections and a few gaskets. Made a huge difference in performance afterward! What's your mileage and have you noticed any rattling sounds? Also, does the smell get worse when accelerating? These details would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Pro tip: Don't wait too long on this one, exhaust leaks can cause more expensive problems if left unchecked.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Currently at 132229 KM and just had a service last month. Yeah, actually noticed the smell gets way worse during acceleration, especially when going uphill. No rattling sounds yet, but there's definitely a slight drop in performance. The exhaust leak theory makes a lot of sense, I was too focused on the sensor being the only culprit. Gonna get it checked out ASAP before it turns into a bigger headache. Really appreciate the heads up about the potential repair costs too, helps me budget for what's coming!

Hey again! Just saw your reply about the mileage and symptoms. Yeah, that's exactly how mine started, the uphill acceleration issue was a major red flag! My Odyssey had around 145000 KM when I faced these problems. Just to share my experience further, after they fixed those exhaust leaks, I noticed the DPF started regenerating normally again. Makes sense because the system needs proper back pressure to work correctly. That strong smell during acceleration was definitely exhaust gases escaping from the cracks, just like in my case. Quick tip from my experience, while they're checking the exhaust system, have them look at the turbo seals too. When they were fixing my car, they noticed mine were starting to wear. Didn't change them right away, but had to do it about 6 months later. Could've saved some money doing it all at once! Let us know what your mechanic finds. I'm really curious if it's the same issue I had. The symptoms are just so similar, especially that performance drop during acceleration. Keep us posted!

Thanks so much for sharing that extra info about the turbo seals, that's definitely going on my checklist for the mechanic to inspect! You've pretty much convinced me it's an exhaust leak situation, especially since our symptoms match up so closely. The bit about checking the turbo seals while they're at it makes total sense, might as well get everything looked at in one go rather than making multiple trips to the shop. I've already called my mechanic and booked it in for tomorrow morning. They seemed pretty confident they could diagnose it quickly, especially after I mentioned the symptoms you described. Really glad I posted here, was about to just focus on replacing that sensor, which clearly wouldn't have solved the actual problem. Really appreciate everyone's help on this! I'll make sure to update the thread once I get the diagnosis and repairs done. Here's hoping it's just the exhaust system and nothing more serious!
