Honda Crosstour: Black Smoke & Power Loss Emergency

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Longer cold start time

Hi all, need help with my 2015 Honda Crosstour. Been having serious issues lately, black exhaust smoke, power loss, and jerking while accelerating. Engine takes forever to start when cold, fuel economy has dropped, and there's a strong exhaust smell. Check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the fuel pressure sensor, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Looking for real experiences to help pinpoint the problem. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and your symptoms sound familiar. I dealt with something very similar on my 2013 Honda Accord (also had a 2016 Civic before). The symptoms you're describing, especially the black smoke and power issues, got me worried too. Turned out it was actually some faulty cable connections that were messing with the engine management system. My mechanic found corroded wiring harness connections that were causing all sorts of weird behavior. Cost me about 155 Euro to get it sorted, including labor and parts replacement. Before jumping to conclusions though, what's your mileage and maintenance history? Also, have you scanned for error codes? That check engine light could tell us a lot. Let me know and I might be able to help more specifically! BTW, while the fuel pressure sensor could be suspect, these symptoms often point to electrical issues in these Honda models. Would love to help you narrow it down further.

Thanks for the detailed response! My Crosstour just hit 218819 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. Actually got the error codes scanned yesterday, showing P0172 (system too rich) and P0108 (MAP sensor high input). Good to know about those electrical issues you mentioned. The corroded wiring thing makes sense since I've been noticing some electrical problems too, like delayed response from the throttle. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair took? Also wondering if you had any fuel smell issues with your electrical problems? Thanks for helping me figure this out!

Hey again! Yeah, those error codes definitely ring a bell and match up with what I experienced. On my Accord, the repair took around 3-4 hours total. And yes! I actually did have that strong fuel smell you mentioned, it was super noticeable, especially when accelerating. The MAP sensor code (P0108) along with the rich mixture code (P0172) makes perfect sense now. These were exactly the same codes I got before finding out about my wiring issues. The corroded connections were messing with the sensor readings, causing the car to dump too much fuel into the system, hence that nasty black smoke and fuel smell. The throttle response delay you're experiencing? That's exactly what happened to me too. It's like the car couldn't decide how much fuel to give, right? Super annoying, especially in traffic! One thing I'd suggest, when your mechanic checks the wiring, have them specifically look at the connections around the MAP sensor area. In my case, there was some moisture damage there that wasn't immediately obvious. BTW, those 2 months since your last service might be significant, sometimes these issues can develop pretty quickly, especially if there's any exposure to moisture or road salt. Let me know what your mechanic finds!

Thanks so much for all this info, it's incredibly helpful! The similarities between your experience and mine are really striking, especially with those identical error codes and symptoms. I'm feeling much more confident now about what might be wrong. I've already called my mechanic and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning, specifically mentioning the wiring harness and MAP sensor area like you suggested. You've probably saved me a lot of time and money by sharing your experience, I was about to order a new fuel pressure sensor which clearly wouldn't have fixed the actual problem! Really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through this, especially with all the specific details about your repair. I'll definitely update the thread once my mechanic checks it out, might help someone else with similar issues down the line. Thanks again for your help!

Let our mechanics help you!
