Honda Crosstour Trans Slipping: Sensor or Bigger Issue?

Grinding noise when shifting gears

|

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone! I'm having some trouble with my '09 Honda Crosstour (gas engine, 92K km) and could use some advice. The transmission's been acting weird lately, slipping and making grinding sounds when shifting. Also, got a warning light on the speedometer. I suspect it might be the transmission oil pressure sensor, but after a recent bad experience with a mechanic, I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Did it turn out to be the sensor, and if so, what was your repair experience like? Any suggestions on what to look out for when getting it fixed? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I actually had similar issues with my 2012 Honda Accord V6. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar, my car was also slipping gears and making those unpleasant grinding noises. Took it to the garage last month, and turns out my transmission fluid was critically low, plus the sensor was faulty. The mechanic showed me how the old fluid had turned dark brown instead of the proper cherry red color. It wasn't just a simple sensor issue in my case. They had to flush the transmission, replace the fluid, and install a new pressure sensor. The transmission pan also needed cleaning because of some metal debris they found, that was pretty concerning. The grinding had caused some wear, but thankfully I caught it before any major damage occurred. This definitely isn't something you want to postpone. Low transmission fluid can cause serious damage to your transmission. Get it checked soon, the sensor might be the culprit, but you'll want to rule out any other transmission issues while they're at it. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as I'm dealing with pretty much the same symptoms. I'm glad you caught it before any serious damage happened. Hey, if you don't mind me asking, what did the whole repair job end up costing you? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix? I'm trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and whether this is likely to be a one-and-done repair or if I should expect more issues down the road.

Hey again! Really happy to update you on this! After getting it fixed, my Accord's been running like a dream, no more weird noises or slipping issues at all. The total bill came to 365€ for everything, including sorting out the low transmission fluid and replacing that faulty pressure sensor. Honestly, considering what could've happened if I'd left it longer, I think it was money well spent! The mechanic did a thorough job and explained everything they found. The transmission's been working perfectly since then, shifts are smooth as butter now. Haven't had a single warning light or any other transmission-related problems pop up. It's definitely been a one-and-done fix in my case. Just make sure you get it checked out soon, catching these things early like I did really helps avoid those scary repair bills that come with major transmission damage. Keep us posted on how it goes with yours!

Thanks so much for all the details! You've honestly made me feel a lot better about getting this fixed. Actually, I bit the bullet and took my Crosstour to a mechanic yesterday. You wouldn't believe it, it was almost exactly what you described! The fluid was super dark and needed a complete flush, plus they had to replace that pesky sensor. The whole thing set me back about 400 bucks, but honestly, after seeing the state of that old fluid, I'm just relieved I didn't wait any longer. The mechanic was actually pretty cool, showed me everything they were doing and explained why the grinding was happening. They even let me see the old sensor that was causing all the trouble. Took it for a test drive afterward, and wow, what a difference! No more grinding, smooth shifts, and that annoying warning light is finally gone. Feels like I'm driving a different car! Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out, you definitely helped me dodge a bullet there. Now I can stop worrying every time I need to accelerate!
