Jerking on acceleration

Hi everyone! Having serious trouble with my 2015 Honda Crosstour. The engine's showing multiple symptoms: black exhaust smoke when accelerating, unusual shutoffs, power loss, jerking, and poor fuel consumption. The check engine light is also on. The car stalls at idle and there's a strong exhaust smell. I suspect it might be a low pressure fuel system issue. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Want to have some idea before taking it to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I faced a really similar issue with my 2013 Honda Accord (also had an Insight before). Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, the black smoke, stalling, and that awful fuel smell were driving me crazy! Took it to my regular workshop, and it turned out to be incorrect software values in the fuel pump control module. They had to recalibrate the whole thing. Cost me about 45 Euro and fixed all those issues, running smooth ever since. Before we dig deeper, Current mileage? When was your last fuel system service? Any recent changes in fuel type? Do you notice these issues more during cold starts? This info would help determine if you're facing the same problem I had. Let me know, and I'll try to share more specific details about my experience!

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience. My odometer is at 245,810 KM, and I just had a regular service done last month. What's interesting is that I also noticed the issues being worse during cold starts! Didn't think that detail was important initially. Haven't changed my fuel type, been using the same station for years. Your fuel pump control module suggestion sounds promising, the symptoms match up pretty well. Did you notice any specific warning codes when your issue happened? And was the fix pretty quick, or did they need to keep the car for a while? Really hoping it's just a calibration issue like yours and not something more serious!

Hey again! Thanks for those details, the cold start issue and mileage definitely ring some bells from my experience. When I had the problem, I remember getting the P0087 code (fuel rail/system pressure too low) and P0171 (system too lean). The calibration fix was pretty quick, they had my car ready in about 2 hours. But honestly, given your mileage, there might be a bit more to it than just the software calibration I needed. After my initial fix, I actually had a similar issue pop up again a few months later. Turned out the fuel pressure sensor was also acting up and needed replacement. That's something worth checking in your case too, especially with the similar cold start symptoms. The sensor replacement was a bit pricier (around 200 Euro) but totally worth it, haven't had any issues since then. Quick tip from my experience, while they're at it, might be worth having them check the fuel filter too. At that mileage, it could be contributing to the problem. When they changed mine, there was quite a bit of gunk built up! Let me know what you find out when you get it checked. Really curious if it's the same issue I had!

I'll reply as (who started the conversation): Wow, this is super helpful! Those diagnostic codes you mentioned definitely give me something specific to discuss with my mechanic. I'm actually relieved to hear about the fuel pressure sensor possibility, was worried it might be something way more expensive like the entire fuel pump or engine issues. You know what? I'll definitely get them to check the fuel filter too. Makes total sense given my mileage, and I honestly can't remember the last time it was changed. Smart thinking there! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. I've got my appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning, and I feel much better prepared now knowing what to discuss with them. I'll definitely update you once I find out what's actually causing all this. Fingers crossed it's just the calibration and sensor issues like in your case! Thanks again for all the help, this is exactly the kind of real-world experience I was hoping to learn from!
