Honda Brio Engine Stalling Mystery: Bad Coding to Blame?

Check engine light on

Hey all, need help with my 2017 Honda Brio that's acting up. Engine unusually shuts off, refuses to start, and the check engine light is on. The workshop found fault codes suggesting incorrect coding might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Really need some real-world experiences here to better understand what I'm dealing with.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and faced something very similar with my 2015 Honda Jazz (and I also own a City). Had the exact same symptoms, unusual shutdowns, starting issues, and that annoying check engine light. Turned out a third-party ECU tune I had installed was causing conflicts with the engine management system. Took it to my trusted mechanic who diagnosed it, removed the faulty tune, and reprogrammed the ECU back to factory settings. Cost me about 180 Euro but totally worth it as it's been running perfectly since. Could you share more details about your Brio? Like has it had any recent modifications or ECU work done? Also, what specific fault codes is your workshop seeing? That would help me know if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Brio's at 221557 KM on the odo and just had its service last month. Actually, now that you mention ECU mods, I did have an aftermarket performance chip installed about 2 months ago to try to improve fuel efficiency. Maybe that's causing the conflicts? This really sounds similar to what you experienced. I'll check with my mechanic about removing the chip and resetting to factory settings. Hopefully, that'll sort things out without too much hassle!

Oh that's exactly what I thought when I read about your performance chip! You're definitely dealing with the same headache I had. And yeah, with your mileage being pretty similar to what mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 215,000 KM), it's like déjà vu. Listen, those aftermarket performance chips can be really hit or miss. I learned this the hard way with my Jazz. They promise better fuel efficiency, but sometimes they just don't play nice with our Honda's factory ECU. Mine started acting up about 6-7 weeks after installing the chip, sounds pretty similar to your timeline too. Quick tip from my experience: when you get it removed, make sure they do a complete ECU reset afterward. My mechanic initially just removed the chip, but we still had some ghost codes until he did a proper reset to factory settings. After that, my Jazz went back to running like a dream. Honestly, I think you've nailed the diagnosis here. Would love to hear how it goes after you get it sorted. These Hondas are usually bulletproof when kept stock!

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! You've honestly made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I'll definitely get the chip removed and insist on that complete ECU reset you mentioned. It's really helpful knowing someone else went through the exact same thing and got it fixed. I've already called my mechanic and scheduled it for tomorrow morning. Will stick to the factory settings from now on, lesson learned about these aftermarket mods! The fuel savings weren't even that impressive to begin with. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and those specific tips about the reset. I'll update the thread once it's all sorted, but feeling pretty confident now that we've identified the likely culprit!
