Honda Amaze Diesel: DPF Issues Causing Black Smoke & Power Loss

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2020 Honda Amaze Diesel. Engine's acting up with black smoke during acceleration, power loss, rough running, and terrible fuel consumption. The DPF isn't regenerating properly and check engine light is on. I suspect it's related to low DPF differential pressure. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What was the fix at your workshop? Any tips would help!

Hey there! I've got some experience with diesels, having dealt with similar symptoms on my 2018 Honda City diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced, turned out to be a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. After the check engine light came on, I took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed it. It was a relatively straightforward fix, but the sensor itself wasn't cheap. Cost me about 250 Euro all in, including labor. The new sensor solved all issues, no more black smoke, power came back, and fuel consumption returned to normal. DPF started working properly again too. Before I can give more specific advice, Current mileage? Any recent maintenance done? Are you getting any specific error codes? Keep us posted!

Thanks for your detailed response! My Amaze has clocked 137644 KM and just had its routine service last month. Really helpful to know about your sensor experience, gives me hope it's not the entire DPF system that needs replacing! Currently writing down all the symptoms to show my mechanic. The engine light's been consistently on for the past week, but haven't gotten the error codes read yet. Will get that checked first thing. Did your car also feel particularly sluggish before you got it fixed? Just curious if the symptoms match up exactly. Thanks again for the info about the costs too, good to have a ballpark figure in mind before heading to the workshop!

Hey again! Yeah, my City was definitely sluggish before I got it fixed, exactly like what you're describing. The lack of power was super noticeable, especially when trying to overtake or go uphill. It felt like the car was just struggling to breathe, if you know what I mean? With your mileage being similar to what mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 140000 KM), I'm even more convinced it's probably the same problem. Good call on getting those error codes read, that's what really helped pinpoint the issue with mine. Just thinking back to my experience, one thing I forgot to mention earlier is that before changing the sensor, my mechanic cleaned the DPF sensor connections first, just to rule out any simple fixes. Didn't work for me, but might be worth asking your mechanic about that before jumping straight to replacing parts. Let me know what those error codes show up, curious to see if they match what I had. The whole thing was pretty stressful at the time, but it's actually a pretty straightforward fix once you know what's wrong. Keep us updated!

Thanks so much for all this extra info! It's really reassuring to hear our cases are so similar, especially the sluggish feeling and the mileage match. I totally get what you mean about the car struggling to breathe, that's exactly how it feels! I've just scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning. Will definitely ask them about cleaning those sensor connections first, great tip! It'd be amazing if something that simple could fix it. I'll make sure to get those error codes read first thing and share them here. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. You've helped calm my nerves about this whole situation. Will update the thread once I know more! Thanks again for all your help!
