High fuel consumption and Check Engine light on Ford B Max 2013 - experience wanted

Hello folks! I have a problem with my 2013 Ford B Max (gasoline engine, already 121,675 km down). "Check Engine" is lit, fuel consumption has gotten insanely high and, on top of that, the exhaust smells bad. Last time I went to the mechanic was not a pleasant experience, so before I go back, I thought I'd ask here. Have any of you ever had a similar experience, especially with a faulty air valve? How did it go with your mechanic? Would be really grateful for your experiences. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Ford B Max is experiencing high fuel consumption, a lit "Check Engine" light, and a bad exhaust smell. A similar issue in a 2010 Ford Focus was linked to a faulty secondary air valve, indicated by fault code P0410. The solution involved repairing the cable/plug connection to the secondary air valve/secondary air pump, requiring specialized tools and expertise. The suggested course of action is to consult a mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, yep, I had a similar problem with my 2010 Ford Focus. My engine light was flashing, fuel consumption was skyrocketing and I had a strange smell coming from the exhaust. My mechanic then got fault code P0410 in, which indicated a problem with the secondary air valve. They had to repair the cable/plug connection to the secondary air valve/secondary air pump. It wasn't a super serious problem, but it did require expertise and specialized tools that aren't normally available in a standard garage. So, yeah, unfortunately you'll probably have to see a mechanic. Who knows, maybe it's not as serious for you as it is for me. Good luck!

Thanks for the helpful answer! Now I'm more reassured when I face the mechanic. Do you happen to remember how much you had to pay for it? And have you had any other problems since then or has everything been fine since then? Thank you very much!

Hey, I'm glad I could help! Yes, I still remember the cost. It was exactly €95 to repair the cable/connector on the secondary air valve/secondary air pump. Sounded complicated at first, but seems to be standard for this type of problem. As for the air valve, since the visit to the mechanic, everything has been running smoothly again. The fault was rectified and I've had no further problems. So, don't worry about it, I'm sure everything will run smoothly for you! You're welcome and good luck!

Great, that sounds very hopeful for all of us! 95.0€ is still within reason. It definitely seems complicated, oh well. The main thing is that it works again afterwards. You've really helped, thanks for the detailed information! I'll probably have to take it to a mechanic after all. Let's see what comes of it. Great, thanks for the encouraging words!
