Help for problems with Skoda Superb Diesel: Oil lamp lights up, engine overheats and metal shavings in the oil - engine damage?

Metal shavings in oil

Weird engine noise

Oil light on

Hi, I have a problem with my Skoda Superb Diesel (year 2016, 78234 km mileage). The oil light is on, the engine is making strange noises, overheating and I have found metal shavings in the oil. My suspicion is a defective sensor for the engine oil temperature so that the engine oil has become too hot and I now have "engine damage". Does anyone have experience with similar problems and can give an estimate of the costs at the workshop? I already had a big bill once and would like to avoid unexpected costs this time. Many thanks in advance!

Hey, thank you all for the advice! There's always something to learn from your experiences. So I went to the mechanic who also changed the oil filter and the engine oil temperature sensor. Everything is now running smoothly again. The repair cost around €235, which contributed to my feeling of relief. I don't know what exactly happened to the chips in the oil, but the mechanic looked at it again and couldn't find anything. Maybe I overreacted a little. So far there have been no further problems. You can imagine how relieved I am not to have been confronted with unexpected costs again. All in all, I have to say that the whole story turned out well. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to reply! You are the best!

Hey, I can well understand that you're worried. I drive a Skoda Octavia (2019 model year) and had a similar problem in the workshop last year. But it could also be a problem with the oil filter and the oil pressure sensor. On my car, the oil filter and sensor had to be changed and since then everything has been running smoothly again. However, I haven't had any chips in the oil yet, just the warning light on. It's best to have the car towed to a workshop, but don't start it! Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks for your feedback. Good to know that it was only the oil filter and the sensor. Can you perhaps remember what you paid for the repairs? And has anything else come up since then? I just don't fancy any more surprises. I had constant problems with my Audi A3 (built in 2015) despite several visits to the garage. I hope my Skoda isn't such a money-wasting machine. Thank you in advance!

Hey, I've been reading along a bit and this sounds like a really stressful situation. I had a similar problem. After I replaced the faulty engine oil temperature sensor, everything was fine again and no new problems have arisen so far. So in my car - I drive an Opel Astra by the way, not exactly the latest model either - I paid around €200 for the defective coolant thermostat.

Hey, that doesn't sound good with your Skoda. Chips in the oil are always critical. I once had a similar problem with my 2017 VW Golf after a similar mileage, around 80,000 km. In my case, it was the sensor for the engine oil temperature that was broken. The repair also cost me around €200. Not exactly cheap, but definitely cheaper than engine damage. However, it is still better if the sensor indicates an error before the oil gets really hot and the engine is damaged. A repair at higher mileage can also be more expensive with these models. In any case, I would have it checked in a workshop as soon as possible. Good luck and hopefully no more nasty surprises!

Unfortunately, that doesn't sound so good. Did you find out where the shavings came from or did you get any consequential damage?
