Help Audi A6 Diesel 2010: Diesel particulate filter overload?

Jerking on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Hi, I drive a 2010 Audi A6 diesel and have noticed some strange problems recently. When accelerating, it emits black smoke, the engine light is on and the car jerks a little. It also smells quite strongly of exhaust. It seems as if the DPF regeneration is not working properly. Is this perhaps due to a heavy load on the diesel particulate filter? Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me advice on how best to tackle this problem? I am particularly interested in how your garage has solved this problem. Many thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2008 Audi A4 diesel. I don't know much about cars, but the guys at the garage did a pretty good job of explaining what the fault was. The guy at my garage said that the DPF was extremely loaded. They had to replace the particulate filter. That ended up costing me a whopping 1400 euros. For further details, I would recommend going to a trustworthy garage and having them take a look under the hood.

Thanks for your reply. By the way, my A6 has 201411 km on the clock so far. Like your A4, my car also seems to have problems with the DPF. I was afraid of that :( 1400 euros is a lot of money, but if it fixes the problem, I guess I have no other choice. I think I'll take it to the garage and see what the guys there say. Your experience has helped me a lot though! Thank you very much!

Hey, I had exactly the same problems with my 2012 A3 diesel. Black smoke, engine light, jerking and a strong exhaust smell. It sounds like the diesel particulate filter is extremely overloaded. They also replaced the particulate filter at my garage and charged me a small fortune for it. But it was unavoidable, because you can only sell the car with a clogged DPF. A little tip: see if you can find a garage where they might try to clean it again before you spend the money on a new one. In my case, it didn't work, but who knows, maybe you'll have better luck.

Hi, I'm getting the feeling that it really is the diesel particulate filter. I'll see if the garage could try to clean the DPF first before I spend the money on a new one. Thanks in any case for your tips!

Hey, I had exactly the same problem with my A6. I also had to have a new DPF fitted and a new exhaust back pressure sensor. Bye
