Heavy Steering & Vibrations Plague Audi TT Driver

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

|

Power steering without function

I need help with my 2007 Audi TT (68k km, gas engine). The steering has become really heavy lately, and the wheel keeps vibrating while driving. I think it might be a faulty steering angle sensor, but my last mechanic visit wasnt great so Im hesitant to go back. The traction control light sometimes flickers too. Has anyone dealt with similar alignment problems or automotive sensors acting up in their TT? Really want to know what to expect regarding repair costs and if this is something that needs immediate attention.

Last month my 2010 Audi S5 had similar symptoms. The heavy steering and vibrations were clear signs of steering angle sensor malfunction, which directly affects the electronic stability system. The automotive sensors in these models are interconnected, when the steering sensor starts failing, it triggers various warning lights and affects multiple systems. In my case, the wheel alignment was perfect, but the car still showed instability because the sensor was sending incorrect data. The repair required recalibration of the steering angle sensor and a full system diagnostic to ensure all other automotive sensors were communicating properly. This isnt a DIY job, it needs specialized equipment to reset and code the sensor correctly. This is a serious issue that needs prompt attention. Faulty steering sensors can compromise vehicle stability and safety systems. The longer you wait, the more strain gets put on related components like the power steering system. The traction control light flickering is a major red flag, its showing that the electronic stability system isnt getting accurate steering input data. Would strongly recommend taking it to an Audi specialist who can properly diagnose and recalibrate the system.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the S5. I had almost identical issues with my TT, heavy steering, vibrations in the steering column, and those annoying traction control warnings. The steering angle sensor replacement fixed everything for me. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was? Also curious if youve had any other sensor issues pop up since getting it fixed. My TT has been running smoothly for a few months now but always good to know what to watch out for.

Just got back from the Audi specialist last week, the steering sensor issues are completely resolved now. They fixed the faulty coding in the steering angle sensor which solved all the stability control problems. Total cost was 195 Euro for the diagnostic and recoding work. The electronic stability system is working perfectly now, no more traction control lights or heavy steering problems. The steering column feels much smoother and the wheel vibrations have completely disappeared. Unlike some sensor failures that need complete replacement, my issue was fixed through recoding alone. Since the repair three months ago, all automotive sensors have been working normally with no new issues. The wheel alignment is spot-on and the car handles like new again. The specialist mentioned that regular system checks can help catch these steering sensor problems early before they cause more extensive damage. Worth mentioning that proper sensor calibration is crucial, skipping this step can lead to recurring issues even after repairs. Make sure any future work is done by techs with the right diagnostic equipment for these complex systems.

Thanks for the input. I finally got my TT fixed last week and wanted to share my experience. After reading about similar issues, I took it to a certified Audi specialist instead of my regular shop. The diagnosis confirmed a faulty steering angle sensor that was causing the electronic stability system to malfunction. They found the sensor needed full replacement plus recalibration. Total cost came to 480 Euro including parts and labor. The difference in driving is night and day. No more heavy steering or wheel vibrations. The traction control light has stayed off, and the car handles perfectly through corners again. The automotive sensors are all communicating properly now. The specialist explained that these steering sensor issues are fairly common in older TTs and recommended annual electronic stability system checks to catch problems early. Glad I didnt wait longer as it could have led to more expensive repairs. For anyone facing similar symptoms, dont hesitate to get it checked. The safety risks of driving with malfunctioning stability controls arent worth it.
