Heavy A6 Steering Points to Failed Angle Sensor

Looking for advice with my 2015 Audi A6 (gas, 35966km). The steering has become really heavy recently and the wheel vibrates while driving. Pretty sure its the steering angle sensor acting up, since power steering isnt working properly. Had some trust issues with my last mechanic, so would appreciate hearing about your experiences with similar sensor failures before getting it fixed. Anyone dealt with angle sensor replacement on an A6? What was the repair cost and outcome like?

Had a similar issue with my 2012 Audi A4 2.0T last winter. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, heavy steering and vibration through the wheel. The alignment problems started gradually, but the power steering issues made it unsafe to drive. Initial diagnosis confirmed automotive sensors were failing, specifically the steering angle sensor. The repair required not just sensor replacement but also recalibration and coding of the new unit. Its not a simple plug-and-play fix since these angle sensors need proper electronic integration with the cars systems. This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention. The faulty sensor affects multiple safety systems including ESP and power steering. The repair involved removing the steering wheel, replacing the sensor unit, and performing electronic calibration with specialized diagnostic equipment. Most telling sign of sensor failure was the ESP light staying on after startup. If youre seeing this alongside the steering issues, its almost certainly the angle sensor. The repair resolved all symptoms, steering became light again and the vibrations disappeared completely. Worth noting that a proper dealer-level diagnostic tool is essential for coding the new sensor. Not all independent shops have this capability for Audi steering angle sensor programming.

Thanks for describing your A4 experience, sounds exactly like what Im dealing with on my A6. Quick question: do you remember roughly what the final repair bill came to? Always helps to know what to expect cost-wise. Also curious if youve had any traction control or steering issues pop up since getting it fixed? Planning to visit the dealer next week since they seem best equipped to handle the steering sensor calibration properly.

I got the steering angle sensor fixed at an authorized shop last month, and the total came to 195 Euro for diagnosing and recoding the faulty sensor. The electronic stability system is working perfectly now, no more heavy steering or alignment problems. The automotive sensors communicate properly with all vehicle systems after the repair. The wheel alignment and steering response are back to factory specs. No traction control issues or warning lights since the fix. Going to a certified shop with proper diagnostic equipment was definitely the right choice, as they properly integrated the sensor with the cars electronic systems. Good call on choosing the dealer for your A6. These sensor replacement jobs need specialized equipment for proper calibration. Mine has been running like new since the repair, smooth steering, no vibrations, and all safety systems working as intended.

Just got back from the dealer and wanted to share my experience. The repair went smoothly, they confirmed it was indeed the steering angle sensor causing the issues. Bill came to 220 Euro total including the sensor replacement and programming. The electronic stability system and traction control are now working perfectly. Driving feels completely different, steering is light and responsive again with no vibrations. Really glad I went with the dealer since they had all the right diagnostic tools to properly calibrate the new sensor. Big relief to have this fixed and get my car back to normal. The heavy steering was getting dangerous, especially at lower speeds. Dealer did the full calibration in about 3 hours. Definitely worth paying a bit more to have it done right the first time.
