Hey, I recently had a similar problem with my 2013 BMW 5 Series. The warning light came on while I was driving and the heater just stopped working. So I went to the garage and the mechanic was able to determine that it was actually the outside temperature sensor. As the sensor is connected to the engine cooling and the interior heating, this had the consequences you describe. I had to have the whole sensor unit replaced. Since then, my car has been running like a baby again, so the trip to the mechanic was definitely worth it.
