Grandland X Trans Issues: Grinding Gears & Whining Sound

Whining or grinding noises

Grinding noise when shifting gears

|

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey everyone, my 2018 Vauxhall GrandlandX diesel is acting up. The transmission's been shifting weirdly and I'm hearing grinding sounds during gear changes, plus there's a constant whining noise. I suspect the transmission oil pressure cooler might be faulty. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in hearing about repair solutions and workshop experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars (moderate DIY level). I had a really similar issue with my 2016 Vauxhall Insignia diesel last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with. In my case, it turned out to be a valve cable connection that went bad. Took it to my regular mechanic, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The fix cost me about 170€ which included parts and labor, they had to replace the faulty connection. What engine size does your GrandlandX have? And how many miles are on it? This info would help me give you more specific advice since these Vauxhall models can have slightly different setups. Also, is the whining noise constant or does it change with speed? Just want to make sure we're looking at the same issue here.

Thanks for the input! Mine's at 231323 KM and just had a service last month. The whining actually changes with speed, gets louder when I accelerate. I'll definitely get that valve cable connection checked out, sounds like it could be the same issue. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair typically takes? I need the car for work, so trying to figure out if I'll need a rental.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get the concern about work, I was in the same boat when my Insignia acted up. For my repair, the whole thing took about 4-5 hours at the shop. My mechanic was pretty efficient with it since they'd seen this issue before with Vauxhalls. But honestly, I'd plan for a full day just to be safe, better to have a buffer, you know? And yeah, that changing whine with speed is exactly what I experienced! Given your mileage (mine was around 200K when it happened), it's definitely worth checking the valve cable connection first. The symptoms are spot-on identical to what I dealt with. Quick tip though, when my mechanic fixed it, they also recommended checking the transmission fluid quality since these issues can sometimes be related. Might be worth asking about that too, especially since you're already getting it looked at. Let me know how it goes! Always curious to hear if others have the same fix work out for them.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Really appreciate you sharing your experience. I've just booked it in for next Tuesday and managed to sort out a rental car for the day, better safe than sorry, like you said. Will definitely ask them to check the transmission fluid while they're at it. Your advice has been super helpful, at least now I have a good idea of what I'm dealing with and won't feel completely lost when talking to the mechanic. I'll update you once it's sorted to let you know if it was the same issue. Thanks again for taking the time to help out!
