Golf TDI Start Hesitation & Stuck Preheat Light Fix Needed

My diesel car hesitates to start and the preheat light stays on continuously. Error codes are stored in the system. Drives fine once running but worried it might be related to glow plugs. Had some bad repair experiences before so looking for advice on diagnosis and repair costs. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms in a 2021 Golf TDI (52000km)?

Had similar symptoms on a 2018 Golf GTD with 60000km. The continuous preheat light and cold start issues pointed directly to faulty glow plugs. After scanning, multiple error codes showed glow plug circuit malfunction. The repair involved replacing all four glow plugs since these components typically wear at similar rates. The glow plug control module also needed replacement as it was causing irregular voltage supply. This ensures proper diesel engine combustion during cold starts. While not the most complex repair, its crucial for reliable cold weather operation and fuel efficiency. Neglecting faulty glow plugs can lead to rough idle, excessive smoke, and potential engine damage. The repair resolved all starting issues and error codes. The job requires proper diagnostic equipment and expertise with diesel systems. Would recommend having a specialist handle this rather than attempting DIY, as incorrect installation can damage the cylinder head threads. Worth noting that modern diesel cars have sophisticated glow plug systems, when they fail, getting it fixed promptly prevents additional issues developing in the fuel injection system.

Thanks for sharing that experience. I had almost identical symptoms on my Golf last winter, hesitation on cold starts and persistent preheat light. Got the glow plugs and control module replaced which fixed everything. Did you remember roughly what the total repair cost was? Also curious if youve had any engine light issues or starting problems since getting it sorted? Just want to make sure my garage quoted me fairly and that the fix tends to last.

Good to hear you got it sorted. My total repair cost was 440€ for the complete glow plug system fix, including parts and labor. That sounds in line with typical pricing for this type of work. Since getting the repair done, the cold start performance has been perfect and no engine light issues have returned. The new glow plugs completely resolved the rough idle and starting problems. Its been about 18 months now with zero related issues. Modern glow plug systems are quite reliable once properly repaired. Just make sure to use quality parts and have them installed correctly. A proper fix should last many years without any recurring problems. The improved fuel efficiency and smoother cold starts make it a worthwhile investment. Plus avoiding potential damage to other engine components from running with faulty glow plugs saves money in the long run.

Thanks for the input. Finally went to my trusted mechanic yesterday. The total came to 460€ including parts and labor, pretty close to what others paid. They replaced all glow plugs and the control module. The cold start is now perfect even in chilly mornings. No more engine light or preheat warning staying on. The engine fires up immediately without any hesitation or engine misfire issues that I had before. Really glad I got this sorted before winter. The fuel efficiency seems slightly better too. The mechanic showed me the old glow plugs, they were pretty worn. Good to know this should be a long-term fix based on others experiences. Much better experience than my previous repairs at other shops. Worth paying a bit more for a proper diagnosis and quality parts.
