Wipers don't work properly

Hey everyone, having issues with my 2002 Mitsubishi Galant Diesel. The wipers stopped working properly and I'm getting a warning light on the speedometer cluster. I suspect it might be the windshield wiper relay, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Diesel a couple years back. The symptoms were exactly the same as what you're describing. Turned out it was a faulty cable connection in the wiper circuit. Took it to my local mechanic who diagnosed and fixed it in about an hour. Cost me around 155€, mostly labor since they had to remove some panels to access and repair the connection. What's the mileage on your Galant? Also, does the warning light come on immediately when you start the car, or only when you try to use the wipers? These details might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Galant just hit 116796 KM and had its latest service about two months ago. The warning light actually only appears when I try to use the wipers, so what you're describing sounds pretty similar to my situation. I might take it to a mechanic to check those connections instead of just replacing the relay. Did your mechanic have to do any special diagnostics before finding the cable issue?

Hey again! Yeah, I remember when I had this problem, it really sounds identical to what you're going through. My Lancer had about 125,000 KM when it happened, so pretty similar mileage to yours. My mechanic actually did run some basic diagnostic tests first, they hooked up their scanner to check the error codes, which pointed them towards the wiring rather than the relay itself. They could see that the system was getting intermittent signals, which is typically a sign of a wiring issue rather than a complete relay failure. The funny thing is, I was also convinced it was the relay at first (just like you), and I nearly bought one online before deciding to get it properly checked. Really glad I didn't waste money on parts I didn't need! Since your warning light only comes on when using the wipers (just like mine did), I'd bet good money you're dealing with the same wiring problem. These Mitsubishis from that era are kind of known for developing these connection issues, especially around the wiper circuit. Let me know what your mechanic finds, I'm curious to see if it's the same problem!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You've definitely saved me from ordering that relay part I had in my online shopping cart. I've just called my local mechanic and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning. They said they'll do the diagnostic scan first thing, just like in your case. It's actually really reassuring to hear that this is a known issue with these models, makes me feel better that I'm not dealing with some weird one-off problem. I'll update you once I get it checked out, but based on everything you've described, I'm pretty confident it's going to be the same wiring issue. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
