FX Diesel Stalling & Rough Idle: EGR Valve Issues?

Engine shuts off by itself

|

Strong exhaust smell

|

Check engine light on

|

Unsteady engine

|

Loss of engine power

|

Shaking while idling

Hey everyone, my 2011 Infiniti FX diesel is giving me headaches. The engine keeps cutting out while driving, runs rough at idle with lots of vibration, and I'm getting terrible engine performance. There's also a strong diesel smell and the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the EGR valve, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone had this fixed? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic resolve it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2013 Infiniti QX70 diesel. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced rough idle, power loss, and that annoying check engine light. Took it to my trusted workshop, and yep, it was a faulty EGR valve. They cleaned it first, but ultimately had to replace it. Cost me around 355€ for parts and labor, but it fixed all those issues completely. The car's been running smooth ever since. Could you share more details about when these symptoms started and how many miles/km you've got on your FX? Just want to make sure we're dealing with the same thing before you spend any money. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Last service was done about 3 months ago, and I'm currently at 119871 KM. The issues actually started pretty suddenly, like within the last week or so. It was running perfectly fine before that. The diesel smell is what really got me worried though wasn't sure if that was normal with EGR issues. Did you notice any weird smells when you had your valve problem? Your fix sounds pretty reasonable price-wise, especially if it sorts out all these problems. I'm gonna get it checked out ASAP.

Hey again! Oh yeah, that diesel smell was definitely part of my experience too! When my EGR valve was acting up, I got that strong diesel smell, especially when idling. It's actually pretty common with EGR issues because the exhaust gases aren't being recirculated properly. Your mileage is pretty close to where mine was when I had the problem (I was around 125,000 KM). And the sudden onset matches my experience too mine literally went from running fine to all these issues within a few days. It's like these things just decide to give up without warning! Just a heads up when they fixed mine, the mechanic mentioned it's worth getting the intake manifold checked while they're at it. Sometimes carbon buildup can contribute to these issues, and they often clean that out while doing the EGR work. Might save you another trip to the shop down the line. Keep us posted on what you find out! I'm curious to know if it's the same issue.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really reassuring to hear that the diesel smell was part of your experience too I was getting worried it might be something more serious. I'll definitely mention the intake manifold to my mechanic when I take it in. Really appreciate the tip! I've actually just booked it in for tomorrow morning at my local Infiniti specialist. Figured it's better to get it sorted sooner rather than later, especially since it's affecting my daily commute. The symptoms match yours so closely that I'm feeling pretty confident it's the EGR valve. Fingers crossed it's a straightforward fix like yours was! I'll update the thread once I get the diagnosis. Thanks again for all your help it's been super useful having someone who's been through the same thing!
