Functional error in EGR valve? - Experience reports wanted for BMW 1 Series Diesel (2013) with engine problems

Hello everyone! I have a 2013 BMW 1 Series Diesel with a proud 145374km on the meter. Recently the engine has been shaking when stationary and also lost some power. Occasionally it even stalled. The exhaust system stinks badly and the engine control light flashes. Could it be a functional fault in the EGR valve? Have any of you ever experienced the same thing and could tell me how the garage solved it? I had a bad experience with the repair recently. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have a 2010 BMW 3 Series that had similar symptoms. When driving, my car once shuddered and lost power. Even the check engine light started flashing and the smell from the exhaust was unpleasant. I was told that the problem might be in the EGR valve. At the workshop, they cleaned the valve and deleted the error in the engine control unit. Then everything ran like clockwork again. I definitely think it's a serious problem and it could also be the EGR valve in your case. But don't worry, it can be solved. Hope it helps you!

Hey, that sounds very similar to my car. Thanks for the tip about the EGR valve, it really seems to be the culprit. Do you remember what you paid for the repair? And did you have any further problems after that or was everything OK then? Thank you!

Yes, I remember the bill wasn't exactly small, but it was worth it. It cost me €155 to repair the damaged cables on the EGR valve/sensor. But since the visit to the workshop, the functional fault in the EGR valve was rectified and my little darling is running like clockwork again! I haven't had any further problems since. So I'd say get it checked and don't drive around with the check engine light flashing. Better safe than sorry! Hope that helps you.

Thanks for your advice! Yes, ignoring the check engine light would certainly not be wise. The cost seems reasonable if the car is legal and safe on the road again afterwards. I will definitely take it to the garage and get the EGR valve checked. Wish me luck, hopefully everything goes smoothly and I don't have any more problems afterwards! Thanks again for your help!
