Freelander TD4: Power Loss & DPF Woes, Sensor Issues?

Loss of engine power

DPF regeneration failure

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2000 Freelander TD4. Engine light is on and I'm getting terrible power loss along with DPF issues and heavy exhaust fumes. Signs point to a faulty exhaust temp sensor, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested in hearing what the fix was and rough repair costs. Any tips would save me some headaches. Thanks!

Hi there! I have some experience working on Land Rovers, and I dealt with something very similar on my 2002 Discovery TD5. The symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing. I had a pretty bad exhaust leak that was causing power loss and throwing engine codes. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found multiple cracks in the exhaust manifold. The whole repair, including parts and labor, set me back about 265 Euro. Definitely worth fixing ASAP as these issues can cause more expensive problems if left unchecked. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: Current mileage? Any unusual sounds from the exhaust? When was your last DPF regeneration? These details would help me better compare it to my situation and offer more targeted suggestions.

Just had the same problem last month with my Freelander! Mine's at 113137 KM and just had its service two weeks ago. The symptoms were spot on, turns out it wasn't just the temp sensor in my case. Had a cracked exhaust manifold too, and the DPF was pretty clogged up. My mechanic did a forced regen and replaced both the sensor and manifold, running sweet as now! Definitely check the manifold for cracks, might save you some diagnostic time. The repair wasn't too painful on the wallet compared to what I was expecting. Good luck with the fix!

Hey again! Yeah, your situation sounds exactly like what I went through with my Discovery! Those cracked manifolds are such a common issue on these engines, aren't they? After getting mine fixed, I actually learned that keeping an eye on the exhaust manifold should be part of regular maintenance, wish I'd known that earlier! Just like you, my DPF was pretty clogged up too. The forced regen did wonders for the performance. Since the repair, I've made it a habit to take longer drives at least once a week to help with natural regeneration, seems to be keeping things running smoothly. Quick tip from my experience: if you're getting any rattling noise from the engine bay area, especially when cold, it's worth checking the manifold bolts too. My mechanic found a couple that had worked loose during the repair. Really glad you got it sorted without breaking the bank! These Land Rovers can be temperamental sometimes, but they're solid machines when properly maintained. Mine's been running great for about 8 months now since the repair. No more check engine lights or power issues!

Thanks for the great advice about the manifold bolts! I'll definitely keep an ear out for any rattling. And you're absolutely right about the longer drives, my mechanic mentioned the same thing about DPF regeneration. I've started taking regular longer trips on the highway, and it seems to be helping a lot. It's such a relief to hear from someone who's had the same issues and got them sorted. Feels good knowing I wasn't just imagining the connection between all these problems. I was worried I'd need to replace the whole engine at one point! But yeah, these Land Rovers really are solid machines when you take care of them properly. Thanks again for the tips, especially about making the manifold checks part of regular maintenance. I'll be keeping a much closer eye on things from now on. My wallet will thank me later! Mine's running beautifully now too, like a completely different vehicle. Good chat!
