Freelander Engine Overheating, Cooling Flap Mystery
Overheating

Thanks for sharing your experience! I had the exact same problem with my Disco, and your description matches it perfectly. The wiring issue behind the bumper was such a pain to deal with. Can I ask what the repair ended up costing you? Also, have you had any other cooling-related problems since getting it fixed? I'm curious because a few months after my repair, I started hearing a slight whining noise from the cooling fan, but it might be unrelated.
Hey there! Glad to help follow up about the Discovery cooling system issue. Yeah, I got it sorted at the mechanic's and it's running perfectly now. The total bill came to 270€ to replace that pesky radiator shutter wiring harness behind the bumper. Once they fixed that worn-out wiring, the malfunction in the cooling air flap system completely disappeared. Money well spent if you ask me! Since the repair, everything's been working like a charm, no overheating, no warning lights, nothing. About that whining noise you're hearing from your cooling fan, I haven't experienced anything like that with mine. The cooling system's been whisper-quiet and working exactly as it should. Might be worth getting that fan checked out though, just to be on the safe side. These engines really don't like running hot! Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Always happy to help out a fellow Discovery owner!
Thanks so much for all the detailed info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and you were spot on about the wiring harness issue. Mine ended up being pretty much identical to what you described. The mechanic I found was really thorough, showed me exactly where the wiring had worn through and explained everything. The repair took about 4 hours, and the final cost was a bit higher than yours at 350€, but they also replaced some protective coverings that were starting to wear out. Funny enough, they even caught another small issue while they were in there, a loose connection in the cooling system sensor. Got that fixed too while they were at it. The car's running so much better now, no more temperature spikes or warning lights. Such a relief! Really appreciate you sharing your experience. It helped me know exactly what to expect and gave me confidence in getting it sorted. Now I finally have a mechanic I can trust for future issues too!
As a 2012 Land Rover Discovery owner with the 3.0L gas engine, I faced almost identical issues last month. My car was also overheating, and it turned out to be the radiator shutter actuator wiring that had worn through behind the front bumper. Had to get the front bumper removed to access the damaged area. The wiring harness was completely frayed where it passes through the mounting bracket, causing the shutters to stay closed. This meant insufficient airflow to the radiator, leading to the overheating. The fix required replacing the entire wiring harness section and installing protective sleeving to prevent future wear. It's actually a known issue, and yes, it's serious because continuous overheating can damage your engine. The repair job takes about 3-4 hours since they need to remove the bumper. My advice: get it checked soon, as driving with an overheating engine isn't worth the risk. Make sure whoever works on it has experience with Land Rover cooling systems.
