Function of transfer case
A transfer case is an essential component for four-wheel drive vehicles. It is typically positioned after the manual or automatic transmission in the driveline. Here, its job is to effectively distribute the torque generated by the engine, which has been put into a suitable ratio by the transmission.
This distribution is made to two driven axles or to through-drive axle drives if the vehicle has more than two axles. Examples include all-wheel-drive three-axle 6×6 trucks. Depending on the specific design of the transfer case, the through-drive can be permanent or switched by the driver as needed.
