Function of transfer case
A transfer case is an essential component for vehicles with all-wheel drive. It is typically positioned after the manual or automatic transmission in the driveline. Here, it has the task of effectively distributing the torque generated by the engine, which has been brought into a suitable ratio by the transmission.
This distribution is made to two driven axles or to through-drive axle drives if the vehicle has more than two axles. Examples include all-wheel drive three-axle 6×6 trucks. Depending on the specific design of the transfer case, the through-drive can be permanent or shifted by the driver as needed.
