Function of mass air flow sensor
The mass air flow meter (LMM) plays an essential role in modern motor vehicles. It measures the mass of intake air entering the engine. This information is crucial for the engine control unit to correctly calculate the fuel injection quantity and thus ensure an optimum fuel-air mixture.
A defective LMM can lead to a variety of problems, including poor engine performance, increased fuel consumption and even engine malfunctions. In most cases, the LMM operates on the hot-film or hot-wire principle. In both, an element is heated and the amount of air required to cool it is measured. This allows precise measurement of the mass of air flowing through.
