Knock sensor functionality
The automatic transmission of a vehicle has a temperature sensor that measures the temperature in the transmission oil and transmits the information to the engine control unit. The transmission oil temperature sensor is usually a two-pole sensor with a variable resistor.

A voltage is applied to one pole of the resistor and a ground line to the other. The reference voltage helps the control unit to monitor the temperature of the gearbox. If the transmitted temperature is too high or too low, an error is stored in the control unit.
