Typical consequences

If this defect is detected, it may lead to the following problems:

  • Engine damage
  • Engine start not possible
  • Failure of the exhaust emission test (Failure to pass the exhaust emission test)

Function of camshaft phasing

Traditional combustion engines have rigid camshaft timing, meaning valve movements are not adjustable. With fixed crankshaft and camshaft alignment, timing adjustment is not possible. Variable valve timing enables optimization of engine performance, torque, fuel consumption and emissions.

Based on engine speed, load and temperature, valve overlap, valve lift and valve opening times can be varied. Early timing adjustments support throttle response and torque at low rpm, while late adjustments reduce emissions during load operation. At high engine speeds, longer valve opening increases power."
