Glow plug functionality
The glow plug is a central component of a diesel vehicle and helps with cold starting by preheating the cylinder before ignition. When the engine is started, electric current flows through the glow plug and heats its tip.
This raises the temperature in the cylinder and facilitates ignition of the diesel fuel. Glow plugs are especially important in low outside temperatures when diesel fuel is difficult to ignite. Defective glow plugs can lead to starting difficulties and should therefore be checked regularly and replaced if necessary. Modern glow plugs can even be activated during operation to reduce emissions.
