Function of the transmission selector
The transmission selector switch enables the individual driving steps or gears to be engaged. The selector lever position is transmitted to the transmission by means of sensors (in older vehicles by means of a cable). The gear engaged is indicated visually by the gear indicator light in the selector lever.
The selector lever is installed in the center console. The gear engaged is backlit in the selector lever cover. The backlighting is controlled by the sliding contact on the selector lever. A lock prevents accidental shifting to the "R" and "P" selector lever positions. To release the lock, a button on the selector lever knob must be pressed.
