Functionality of fuel volume regulator
The diesel fuel system comprises a low-pressure and a high-pressure side. The former includes the tank, filter, pump and water separator, while the high-pressure side consists of the high-pressure pump and injectors, depending on the type of injection.
A central component is the fuel quantity regulator, an electrically controlled valve that controls the flow of fuel from the low to the high pressure side. The engine control unit actuates the quantity regulator valve to produce the target rail pressure. If less fuel reaches the high-pressure side, the rail pressure drops due to lower filling of the radial cylinders in the high-pressure pump.
