Function of the diesel particulate filter
Diesel particulate filters filter more than 90% of harmful soot and fine particles from the exhaust gases. Closed wall-flow filters made of ceramic or metal are usually installed to filter the exhaust gases. The soot particles are held onto the filter walls due to their molecular attraction (adhesion) and collect there.
With increasing accumulation of particles, the filter must be regularly cleaned by combustion, which requires an exhaust gas temperature of over 550 degrees Celsius. This regeneration mainly produces CO2 and water vapor, with a small residue remaining in the filter as ash. Overloading the filter can impair its function.
