Function of the coolant temperature sensor
The coolant temperature sensor, also known as the engine temperature sensor, continuously measures the temperature of the engine coolant and supplies this data to the engine control unit. Based on this information, the engine control unit controls important processes such as the fuel-air mixture, ignition timing and idle speed.
When the engine is cold, e.g. at start-up, a richer fuel-air mixture is required, whereas at operating temperature a leaner mixture is sufficient. This helps to optimize fuel consumption, engine performance and emission levels. A defective coolant temperature sensor thus has an enormous impact on the vehicle.
