Modern passenger cars contain up to 50 electronic control units that communicate with each other. Since normal wiring would be too large and heavy, these are networked via a bus system. The CAN bus is the most widely used in the automotive sector.
It is a bidirectional system that enables serial data exchange between up to 128 control units. With only two lines (CAN-HIGH and CAN-LOW), the engine control unit, for example, can communicate with the transmission control unit. An optional ground line (CAN-GND) is usually provided via the vehicle body.
