Function of the torque converter lock-up clutch
The torque converter automatic transmission contains the torque converter and the automatic transmission. The torque converter, filled with automatic transmission oil, is located between the engine and transmission and separates the power transmission at idle.It consists of a pump wheel, guide wheel, turbine wheel and, in newer models, the torque converter lock-up clutch.
As soon as the engine starts, the pump wheel rotates, pushing gear oil by centrifugal force, increasing pressure and setting the vehicle in motion. The torque converter lockup clutch prevents power loss by braking the pump wheel during driving so that it and the turbine wheel rotate at the same speed.
