Function automatic transmission selector lever
In the so-called "PARK input circuit" there is usually a sensor integrated either in the neutral safety switch or in the selector lever of the automatic transmission. The task of the transmission control unit is to monitor the circuit voltage.

As soon as the transmission reaches the PARK position, a specific voltage signal occurs. Depending on the make and model, the transmission control unit can be a stand-alone unit or integrated into the engine control unit. If the transmission control unit does not find a plausible signal for the "PARK" position even though the transmission is in the park or neutral position, an error is stored in the transmission or engine control unit.
