Typical consequences

If this defect is detected, it may lead to the following problems:

  • Engine damage
  • Failure of the exhaust emission test (Failure to pass the exhaust emission test)

Function of the secondary air system

Gasoline engines require a rich mixture at cold start. However, this produces a lot of harmful exhaust gases because the catalytic converter and lambda control are not yet ready for operation. This is where the secondary air system comes in: It pumps oxygen-rich air into the exhaust manifold and triggers afterburning, which reduces exhaust gases and heats the catalytic converter quickly.

The secondary air pump draws in ambient air and the secondary air shut-off valve ensures that this only happens during the cold start phase. The control of the valve can be vacuum-based or electrical, depending on the vehicle age.
