Ford S Max 2011: Symptoms of engine faults and increased fuel consumption

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Strong exhaust smell

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my 2011 Ford S Max, gasoline engine, has just 52,261km down. My car is showing really strange symptoms! Black smoke when accelerating, the engine warning light is on and the engine just cuts out like it's running out of breath. I can feel a jerking when driving and it uses a lot of fuel, plus there's a bad exhaust smell and it turns off from time to time when idling. I think it might be the fuel, but I had really bad luck with my mechanic last time and would like to hear your experiences. Have any of you had similar problems? How was it solved at your garage and how satisfied were you with it? I would be grateful for any advice!

Hey, I can understand you, I recently had a similar experience with my 2008 Ford Galaxy, diesel. I also had problems: Engine warning lights, black smoke, high fuel consumption - almost like your box. In my case it was a faulty cable/plug. The check engine light was an indication of this problem, as was the uneven engine running and high fuel consumption. They saw this at my garage. They replaced the plug and renewed the cable. However, I can't tell you whether this is really the only solution, as there could be several reasons for your condition. After the repair, I no longer had these symptoms. You'll just have to have it checked out. But don't worry too much, it's annoying, but it's not the end of the world. I hope that helps you a little!

Hey, thanks for the feedback! It does sound very similar to my problem. Do you remember how much you paid to have it fixed? And has anything else come up since then to worry about? Would love to know what else I might have to adjust to!

Hey, no problem, I'm glad if I can help. The repair cost me €95 to replace the faulty cable/plug. Since the mechanic visit everything is running smoothly again, no more stress with the fuel composition error! So far nothing else has come up to worry about. But as you know, a car can do something new at any time. Just keep your eyes open and watch out for any warning signs. All the best to you and your Ford!

Hopefully I won't run into any more problems like this with my Ford. I'll follow your advice and keep an eye out for warning signs. Thanks again for the valuable information!
