Ford Ranger 2011: Engine problems and poor fuel consumption

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, I have a question regarding my Ford Ranger (gasoline engine, year of manufacture 2011) with about 64849km on the clock. Recently the engine has just stopped, lost power and is running very rough. When accelerating, the car jerks violently and also has poor fuel consumption. And the smell is extreme. And let's not forget the black smoke from the exhaust and the check engine light... I think the problem is with the low pressure fuel system. Has anyone ever had similar signs and had a bad experience with this at the garage? Would be glad if you could share your advice. Thanks and best regards!

Hello, you are definitely not alone with this problem. I had similar experiences with my Ford Focus (built in 2008). The engine was running rough and I also noticed this horrible smell. Jerks when accelerating and poor fuel consumption were also present. It turned out that there was a problem with the software values for the fuel pump. So wrong software values for the fuel pump. As you suspect, this affects the low-pressure fuel system. The mechanics had to replace the fuel pressure gauge and reprogram the software to get everything working properly again. After that, all the symptoms were gone, as you described. It was definitely a serious issue, I would suggest getting the car checked as soon as possible. Basically it could get worse if you ignore it. Good luck and let us know how it went! Regards!

Hey, that really doesn't sound like an easy thing to go through. Had some problems with my Ranger a while back too, but nothing like what you're going through now. Your experience with the low pressure fuel system sounds very similar. Can you happen to remember how much you paid for that repair? And has anything else come up since then that you could share? And , fingers crossed that this all turns out well in the end. Please let us know how you get on and what the garage thinks. Best regards!

Moin, you've really put me to the test. I really had to rummage around in my head to remember the cost. If I remember correctly, it was around €45 that I had to pay to fix the incorrect software values on the fuel pump. After the mechanics had patched it up, my Ford ran like clockwork. This fault in the low-pressure fuel system hasn't caused me any more problems since then. So, take your car to the garage and have it checked. You can't put a figure on the value of a safe vehicle anyway. See you then and keep us up to date on how it went! Best regards!

Hi everyone, thanks for your quick replies and advice! I've read them all thoroughly and the information was really helpful. Your tip about the wrong software values for the fuel pump sounds very plausible. 45€ is definitely manageable if I can fix the problems and get my Ford running again. And, thanks for keeping your fingers crossed. I needed your words of encouragement. I'll keep you posted as soon as I've been to the garage. See you then and thanks again! Best regards!
