Ford Focus 2010: Problems with acceleration, black smoke and increased fuel consumption

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Unsteady engine

Strong exhaust smell

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2010 Ford Focus gasoline engine. When accelerating, it emits black smoke, the check engine light comes on and the engine just stalls. It also loses power, runs rough, jerks when accelerating, consumes a lot of fuel, has a strong exhaust smell and stalls when idling. It seems to me that it could be related to the fuel injection pressure deviating from the set value. Have any of you had similar experiences or any troubleshooting tips? I would be particularly interested to know how you got this resolved at your garage. Thank you!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2008 Ford Mondeo Diesel. My experience in cars is limited (I would say I have some experience), but I was well advised by good mechanics. It turned out that my car had a "fault entry after changing the fuel filter". So I changed the fuel filter and everything was fine again. It cost me a total of 45 euros and everything ran smoothly again. To be able to help you more precisely, could you please give me some more information about your car? What fuel do you use and how many kilometers has your car done? Has it ever had the fuel filter changed? Hopefully I can then help you better.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Well, I normally fill up with Super 95 and the car now has 66,724 kilometers on the clock. I am not aware that the fuel filter has ever been changed. Incidentally, the last inspection was recently. Perhaps I should have that checked next.

Hi again! Yes, that sounds sensible. With 66,724 kilometers on the odometer and never having changed the fuel filter, the symptoms could be from a clogged or heavily used filter. Even if you fill up with Super95, the filter can become clogged over time. I recommend that you have the fuel filter checked at your garage and replaced if necessary. This should hopefully solve the problem. I know it costs a bit of money, but I think it's worth it to get the car going again. If that doesn't help, you could have the fuel pressure control valve checked. The case of high fuel pressure deviating from the set point may perhaps indicate that this part is no longer doing its job. But hey, first the filter. It would be great if you could report back here later on how it went. Good luck and a frustration-free repair, colleague!

Hey, thanks for the advice! I will definitely have the fuel filter checked and maybe replace it if necessary. The fuel pressure regulator valve also sounds logical, I'll keep that in mind too. I'll definitely get back to you as soon as I have any news. I really hope it's just the filter and nothing more serious. Thanks again for your help and kind words. The repair is always a bit frustrating, but I hope it goes quickly and painlessly. So thanks for the support and all the best!
