Engine shuts off by itself

Hey! I'm kind of stressing about my 2012 Fiat Scudo, gasoline engine with about 116k km on the clock. Been seeing black smoke when I rev it, loss of engine power, engine shutting off on its own, and jerking on acceleration. The check engine light’s on and I've noticed poor fuel economy and a robust exhaust smell, too. It has even stalled while idling. I'm thinking the low pressure fuel sensor could be off. Anyone had a similar issue and what was your experience with your mechanic? Kinda had a rough time with mine last time and want to be prepared. Thanks a bunch in advance!

Hey! I totally get where you're coming from. Had something awfully similar with my 2015 Fiat Doblo, diesel engine though. I was getting weird engine behaviors and reduced power just like you. Turned out it wasn't the low pressure fuel sensor in my situation. It was actually cable connections that were the culprit. Corroded terminals leading to my battery and alternator were causing all sorts of messes. Okay, surprise, surprise, right? Symptoms weren't exactly same as yours, but cable issues can manifest in bizarre ways sometimes. And yep, the check engine light was on for me too. I tell you taking it to the garage wasn't pretty, mechanic found the issue after checking out the wiring and connections. He replaced the corroded stuff, tidied all connections, and bam, my Doblo was back in shape like nothing ever happened. So your Scudo might just have similar cable issues. I mean, sure it was a serious issue in terms of day-to-day driving, but fixing it at the garage wasn't the most complicated thing. Good luck with it, hope it turns out to be something as straightforward as mine!

Hey there! Your response is saving my day. My Scudo seems to be singing the same tune as your Doblo. Cable connections, huh? That'd be something I wouldn't even consider. The point about the corroded terminals creating all those issues is also an eye-opener. Really appreciate the feedback, by the way. Just out of curiosity, do you recall how much you ended up shelling out for the repairs? And has anything else cropped up since the fix-up? I’m just trying to prepare myself for what might be coming. Thanks again for your help!

Hey back at you! Yeah, those sneaky cable connections can be real culprits! As for the bill, it came out to be roughly 95 Euro, which I think was pretty fair. Fixing the cable connections was pretty straightforward for the mechanic I guess, hence the 'not so pocket-burning' costs. But again, prices may vary depending on where you're located and the specific work needed. And you bet, since the issue was sorted, my Doblo has been purring like a kitten. Not a single problem! Oh, remember how I mentioned the low pressure fuel sensor in my first post? Turned out later, it was also bugged! Apparently, it had nothing to do with the power loss and black smoke though. Got it fixed much later, but it didn’t feed back into the problems you're experiencing. So don't stress too much on that front. Wishing you the best of luck with the Scudo - fingers crossed it's a simple fix like mine was! Keep us updated.

Thanks for the quick reply! A bill of around 95 Euro doesn't sound too bad, really hoping it's the same for my Scudo. Phenomenal to hear that your Doblo has been performing flawlessly since the fix. You've provided a real relief! I was thinking the worst, considering my past experiences with that annoying fuel sensor. You know what, I'm feeling more positive already. Will surely remember to keep the forum posted on how it turns out, fingers crossed it's an easy repair! Cheers for sharing your experience, it was a real game-changer!
